Head Injury Compensation

Each year, over a million people suffer a head injury that requires a visit to a casualty department. Something like 135,000 people are admitted to hospital due to the seriousness of their injury. Most of these injuries occur in road traffic accidents, falls and accidents at home or at work.

Head injuries can range from minor to very severe. Mild head injuries might include cuts and bruises, or concussion. More serious injuries could be a broken nose, loss of teeth, facial lacerations, deafness oreye injury. Brain injuries are almost always very serious.

Of those that are admitted to hospital after visiting casualty, 85% will have sustained a mild head injury, 10% a moderate head injury and 5% a severe head injury.

Figures obtained by Headway, the brain injury association, show that the people most at risk of brain injury are in the age-group 15-29 and over 65. Men are two to three times more likely to suffer a brain injury than women. This rises to five times more likely in the 15-29 age range.

Headway is a charity that is dedicated to supporting and helping people who have been affected by brain injury. Set up in 1979, Headway has grown into a national organisation that gives support to people across the country. A network of local Groups and Branches provides a wide range of services to brain injury survivors. These services vary from one group to another, but include things like rehabilitation programmes, care support and social re-integration.

The first Headway house was opened in 1983. Its purpose was to provide a day-centre service for therapeutic activities and social contact. Today there are 49 Headway houses operating and over 100 Headway Groups and Branches.

Headway campaigns nationally for improvements in the support available to those affected by brain injury from state health and social care providers, as well as for measures to reduce the number of brain injuries. The organisation has a national helpline and provides information resources to those directly affected as well as to professionals, employers and members of the public. The helpline number is 0808 800 2244 or you can email helpline@headway.org.uk.
